Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common in the UK, particularly through autumn and winter when sunlight; our main natural source, is limited. UK government health surveys have found that around 1 in 6 adults have low vitamin D levels during these months. Because symptoms can be subtle or easily mistaken for other things, a blood test is the most reliable way to know where you stand.
Why is vitamin D so important?
Vitamin D plays a central role in calcium absorption and bone health, and is also involved in immune function and muscle strength. Most of your vitamin D is made in your skin in response to sunlight, with only small amounts coming from food (oily fish, eggs, fortified foods), which is why levels naturally dip over winter in the UK.
Signs and symptoms of low vitamin D
- Fatigue and low energy.
- Bone or muscle aches and general weakness.
- Low mood, especially over winter.
- Frequent infections.
- Hair thinning (in more significant deficiency).
Many people with low vitamin D have no obvious symptoms at all, which is part of why testing is useful rather than relying on how you feel.

What the test measures
The standard blood test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH vitamin D), the main circulating form of vitamin D and the best indicator of your overall status. Results are typically reported as:
- Deficient: levels low enough that supplementation is usually recommended.
- Insufficient: borderline low, often still benefiting from supplementation.
- Sufficient: adequate levels for most people.
Exact thresholds are set by the reporting laboratory and provided alongside your result.
What happens if you’re deficient?
Vitamin D deficiency is usually straightforward to correct with supplementation, and most people see levels normalise within a few months. Your results will indicate whether supplementation is advisable and, where relevant, a repeat test can confirm your levels have improved.
Should you just take a supplement without testing?
A standard daily supplement (as recommended by the NHS for autumn and winter) is safe for most people without testing first.
